Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings
11/9, 10, 11/73
San Francisco, California
9-CD Box Set

San Francisco’s Winterland Arena was home court during one of the Dead’s most glorious eras, and Winterland gigs there were not just events, they became an institution. Grateful Dead played more shows there than any other artist, including the venue’s epic closing in 1978. This nine-disc box set captures every mind-bending note recorded at Winterland during the band's legendary three-night residency in November 1973—a run of shows that Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux argues is among the very finest contained within the band’s vast tape vault.  Winterland 1973, is the long awaited “Complete Run” follow-up to the ecstatically received Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings, which sold out almost immediately in 2005.

Housed in in a deluxe archival box, Winterland 1973  contains a portfolio of 72 previously unreleased tracks, presented in HDCD and mastered from the original two-track soundboard tapes using a cutting-edge process that delivers unparalleled sound quality. We’re certain that these recordings are among the very finest two-tracks ever produced. The box also includes an in-depth 28 page booklet and two surprise pieces of memorabilia from the Winterland era.

From the intricate packaging, to the "extras," to the crystal clear and phenomenal music within, Winterland 1973 is arguably the greatest Vault release put out to date. My only gripe is the use of cardboard sleeves instead of digipaks. This will be hard to top, but I can't wait to see them try! How about a massive Europe '72 run?

    Reviewed By: HERR DOKTOR

Yes, the long awaited Winterland '73 shows. The insert mentions these discs were made from 2-track tapes and that they "you will find this reproduction better than any other two-track recording of this vintage..." Yeah, well that's true but it ain't sayin' much. This set doesn't come close to the FW '69 box of a few years back. Too much crowd/background noise, voices, especially Jerry, are nearly inaudible in spots. But the music is outstanding as I knew it would be. Is this worth $100? Probably. Am I a bit disappointed? Yes. Enjoy, it's better than tapes.

The music is great, but compared to the other times the dead played Winterland, this run is overrated!! Listen to the GD Movie soundtrack and closing at Winterland. In my opinion those shows were much better and more inspiring!! This box set is mellow and laid back. If that is your thing, then this will be heaven. I do not understand why Rhino did not pick the best three or four nights from the late fall tour of 73. I mean the Dead played El Paso Texas (the one and only time in history)!! I enjoy this box, but maybe I am not a 1973 deadhead. Buy it, support the folks at Rhino, the remaining members of the DEAD, you might like it, that is what matters anyway, not my opinion of it!!

I think the music and the shows are pretty strong here. I agree that in a many places, Jerry's voice is very quiet - could be louder. Some great stuff on here. So many standouts, too many to name. Great box set and tons of good music in here. One gripe is Donna. I know she gets slammed alot, but in the early years with the Dead, I don't think she added any value. I love Playin' in the Band, but it's hard to listen to her scream and shriek on this song. I wish they could edit her out or just lower her vocals. Too often she overtakes Bobby and Jerry in many songs and that is not a good thing IMO. Overall - great box set, great shows and a decent price IMO. It comes to $10 a CD with the bonus disc.

Regarding your quote"Listen to the GD Movie soundtrack and closing at Winterland": With all due respect, having attended all 4 shows culled for the GeeDee Movie, the closing of Winterland '78/'79 & every show in this particular run (& every GeeDee show at Winterland between NYE '72 & the closing), there's not one night from the "last one's" in '74 at Winterland (prior to the hiatus of '75) nor closing night that get close to the raging intensity & pristine renderings of tunes reached by the band during this run--like night & day. I think you may have hadta be there to experience first hand the marked difference. On paper the later dates with additional material not yet penned in '73 look to be preferable documents. But the reality is, at this particular period in time, the band had just released their debut effort on their own Grateful Dead Records label, "Wake of the Flood" & were obviously very fired up about it & horny to blow it out for the hometown crowd. You are correct in your assertion that later in '73 was formidable. This was a growth spurt period unlike anything the band would experience ever again & at this point the shows steadily improved into mid '74. Splitting hairs to be sure as all of this is exciting stuff by anyone's measure! Cheers.

  • Great Music, Weak Engineering

    Reviewed By: James Savage

First the good news. The set lists from these 1973 shows are wonderful, and the performances themselves are excellent, from an excellent year for the Band. All the classics from this period are here, and of course comparing the three shows is great fun. The Saturday night effort is particularly stellar. Now the bad news. Take very seriously the subtle warning that these concerts were recorded on two-track tape. Even the recent engineering efforts to bring these tapes alive is disappointing. Although the sound from the instruments is acceptably clear, the Band's voices are mostly lost in the mix. Bobby, in particular, sounds like he is singing in a long, distant, tunnel. The packaging cannot make up for the sound. Imagine some of the weaker engineering efforts from "Dick's Picks" or "Road Trips," and you get the idea. If you want to hear the Dead at Winterland from this time period, you are much better off buying the five-CD Dead "Movie Soundtrack" from 1974. You will save a lot of money, hear the same songs, and benefit from superior engineering and recording technology.
