2-CD Set

The seventh title in the Pure Jerry series of historic live vault releases, Coliseum: Hampton, VA, November 9, 1991 delivers a classic, late-period JGB show from an east coast tour fondly remembered as one of their best. Energetic and full of heart, the Hampton show—taken from the original two-track soundboard tapes and presented in its entirety on two CDs—finds the line-up enlivened with Bruce Hornsby, who sat in all night on electric piano. The tour introduced several tunes that were new to JGB's repertoire, including three featured here: the Norton Buffalo number "Ain't No Bread In The Breadbox," the Manhattans' soul hit "Shining Star," and Van Morrison's "Bright Side of the Road." Another Morrison song, "He Ain't Give You None"—unearthed from the Garcia-Saunders band's old songbook—also made the set list, as did Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell," which raves with ripping solos traded by Jerry and Hornsby. The mighty show is capped with a stirring rendition of the classic first made famous by Louis Armstrong's 1968 single, "What A Wonderful World." Played by the Garcia band only ten times—and only as an encore—the song became an audience favorite, and Jerry does Satchmo proud with his irresistible performance.
