  • My First Dead Show

    Reviewed By: Benny Naginis

I had arrived in Egypt for a year of college a few days before the first show. Among our group of American college students was DH Dave Brayer from Rochester who was going to school at Amherst College. In our explorations we saw the ads and ticket booths. Dave encouraged us to get to all three shows but I was rather freaked out by new environs and could only make it to the last of the three: 9-18-78. I had some Red Lebanese (a story all by itself) and with my trusty camera I spent most of the show at the foot of the stage staring up at Bobby and occasionally calling for the band to let loose. I had heard of the GD, was familiar with Truckin', Casey Jones and a few others but it was not until living with Dave and listening to his tapes that I began to become aware of what I had experienced. There was no crush or rush on the stage that night, none of the bay area bitterness about staking out territory; just plenty of room to roam, dance, and casually check out spots in front of Jerry, Keith, Donna, and Phil. The pictures I took are not great yet they are a real and original memory. Dave was even able to place his boombox on the stage to make his tapes of the show! It was years before I was able to be front row again and the mellowness of the front of the stage from that night still remains a dream come true. I recognized the band as especially tight and I found "All Over Now", Candyman", "Good Lovin" and "Ollin Arageed" to be immediately appealing. For me, it was Fire on the Mountain that got me hooked. I can't thank Dave enough for getting me on the bus and I continue to pray for the health and happiness of all the kind DHs I have met on the way. Love is real ...

  • It was so uncrowded

    Reviewed By: mario veille

Wonderful description Benny. I was there too. 25, from San Francisco, 1st time east of the rockies. I`ll always remember the scene in front of stage, so uncrowded, walk and stand where ever you feel, so open, just like the surrounding desert. Instead of a bunch of blue coats standing in front of the stage, it was Bill Walton, arm in a cast. I remember hanging out a little ways back, dancing with the local Egyptians under the full moon. Dancing, smiling, flowing. We may not have shared the same verbal language, but we certainly shared somthing very very special. So looking foward to seeing the dvd. It`s been a long time.

The music sounds great when mixed right, some very strong performances here, and the DVD is really wonderful. Although I was not there, the DVD really brings it home to me, wishing that I was. Now I know why these shows were called "legendary."

At last an Official release of the legendary shows under Egyptian skies and a moon that was in full eclipse. 690 lucky souls and thousands of tribesmen and camels basked in the lights and sounds of the Gizar Sound & Light Theater. Now 30 years on, I am able to listen to three CD's of magic, that has some many shades of color, tone and outright Joy. I have yet to watch the DVD, But, I know that will be a fine experience as well. Bravo, Grateful Dead, I have waited three decades to arrive at a star-filled night near the Nile, and enjoy this Music. It is here, at last, and it is Magic!

  • Not that Great

I wasnt even really considering to buy this but as I was browsing music at Borders I noticed that this release was on sale for 27 bucks. I thought what the heck and went ahead and bought it. I am very dissapointed with the DVD as far as the video part of it goes. Most of the songs are shot from a camera side stage and its so dark you cant really even see the band. I can see why this was never released while the vault was under control of GDP.

This is a real treat to have for the collection. Great sound and a real cool DVD.Only one thing though, it would have been great to have some interviews with band members, crew members and Bill Walton on the DVD. With that said, this is a must have for any fan of the Dead.

  • Good music, poor packaging

    Reviewed By: WonderDog

Though the Dead always claimed that they played poorly in Egypt, this set, in many ways, proves them wrong. There are some rough patches, but the music is generally great. What I don't like about this set is the packaging. I know several people who, like me, have had to pick away bits of adhesive from the CDs. The sleeves come apart easily, and the glue gets on the discs. Some can be cleaned, but others cannot. For the price, quality control could be better.

As I was there, I felt what the Dead mean for californians and San Francisco's people specially! I was so lucky to see Jerry and co. on Tv from Egypt - just a reportage - and to see live show at Winterland on Oct 22! great music, great memories! Thank you, guys.

I was skeptical at first about this release since I've heard these shows via various sources. I remember them as slow and boring. But after listening to this package I'm very happy I purchased it. Though not a complete show(s), the selected tracks show much energy to my surprise. HDCD makes such a improvement over fore mentioned various sources.

I'm sorry, but I had the aforemetioned problem too. Bought it via amazon, had glue on the DVD and the sphinx of the package was not standing up (lack of glue) . DVD wasn't running well, always stopped or went to another track by itself.. So I sent it back. Next item had no glue on the discs, but also no glue on one of the pouches and there were scratches on the DVD. So I sent it back to get my money back. The music also isn't very convincing to me, somewhat untogether, I feel. I got "Movie", "Trucking up to Buffalo"; "Dick's Pick 1", "Vault 1 to 3", Cow Palace", "Winterland December 31", "Rockpalast - German TV Concert", "Fillmore West 1969", "Hundred Year Hall", "Rocking the Rhine". With all these concerts I might well compare. But I wasn't in Egypt at that time, so I haven't got any memory. Well, things can't always be perfect. Main thing is: Obama 's won. So congratulations to everyone across the Atlantic Ocean!!

I wouldnt waste my money on this release if I knew what I know now. The first disc had glue on it, the spine of packaging was crushed and on top of all of that the show wasn't good. There is no groove at all with exception to a couple of songs this was not a good show. The only thing that was made it not a complete failure was the vacation tapes part of the DVD. Bonus disc is no bonus, it sucks. FULL SHOWS PLEASE!!!

I cannot believe this is an official release. what a waste of $40. while i can appreciate the historical value of these egypt shows, what i cannot believe is that its an actual release. the shows were pathetically played, with no real emotion. dead heads have listened to these recordings for years, and most have voiced the same sentiments that i have. I will not buy this package for a few reasons... 1) shows suck 2) not a complete show hopefully someone over there will start to give us what we already had...more dicks picks, more complete shows, more instant downloads, and WELL played shows.

I preordered this with the bonus disc and my first copy also showed up with glue stuck on the disc and the rest of the box falling apart. I called costomer support to find no one answering the phones so I left a message and never heard back. I called daily for about two weeks. I bought another copy from another site and quickly put the discs into sleeves that I use for cd-r's just like I have to do for Road Trips. As far as the music, very few highlights aside from Candyman as the other highlights were already used as bonus songs on the expanded Shakedown Street. I have to agree with the above reviewer about 9-14.

"We Sucked". He wasn't kidding. There is not a very good vibe anywhere in the music except perhaps in Olin Arageed. Weir's slide guitar playing has always been terrible, but he just about ruins every song from start to finish in these recordings. I love the DVD for the little glimpses it gives into what was a pilgrimage for the Dead and a rare occasion for any rock band. But good music it is not. Compare Garcia at Keane College two who years later for a really hot set: After Midnight. There's no chemistry like that in the Grateful Dead Egypt recording. Oh well, I love 'em all the same, just probably won't listen to this release as much as, say, DP7 ...

After hearing everybody dump on these performances, I was pleasantly surprised on my first listed to Rockin' The Cradle. My only complaint is the cheezy title - the performances are extraordinary (yes there are the normal ups-n-downs). Particularly, Shakedown Street>Drums is just outta sight. What a treat to finally hear this stuff at such a high level of quality. And what a crowd - just enough crowd noise to get an idea of the insane energy of those nights. People, please don't come here to hate. Why would anybody buy a Dead show that doesn't appreciate the band? If you want TIGHT, try listening to your radio.
